Signed by Detroit as a non-drafted free agent on July 29, 1998...traded by Detroit along with SS Juan Gonzalez to Seattle for SS Carlos Guillen on January 8, 2004...signed by Detroit as a minor league free agent on December 12, 2005...resides in Las Matas de Farfan, DR.

In his third season with Detroit after returning to the club as a minor league free agent prior to the season, Santiago spent the majority of the season with the Tigers and appeared in 43 games...collected a season-high two hits on May 13 at Cleveland — also collected two hits on June 11 at Toronto...optioned to Triple A Toledo prior to the game on July 21 against Oakland...re-called from Toledo prior to the game on August 16 at Boston — appeared in one game with the Tigers before being optioned to Toledo prior to the game on August 21 against the White Sox...re-called from Toledo prior to the game on September 1 against Los Angeles...batted .323 (10-31) over his final 21 games of the season with Detroit, dating back to June 11.
2005 Season Highlights
Spent most of the season at Triple-A Tacoma and had four three-hit games for the Rainiers. Hit 10 home runs for Tacoma and drove in 50 runs in 129 games. Scored game-winning run for the Mariners as a pinch-runner against the Angels on Sept. 14.
2004 Season Highlights:
King of the Tacoma Shuttle in '04, being promoted four times during the season...Used primarily as a late-inning defensive replacement by the Mariners...Batted one point higher (.194) in 18 games with the Mariners than he did (.193) in 71 games with Tacoma.

Spent his first full season at the Major League level, beginning the year as the Tigers second baseman before shifting back to his natural shortstop position late in June...His .225 batting average and .284 slugging percentage were the lowest of any American League player, while his .292 on-base percentage was third-worst in the league...Topped the league with 18 sacrifices, the most by a Tigers player since Chico Fernandez had 19 sacrifices in 1960...the 18 sacrifices were the most in the majors since the Kansas City's Tom Goodwin had 21 in 1996...Established a career high with an eight-game hitting streak April 6-16, batting .360 ( 9x25) with three doubles and four RBI...Swiped two bases versus Toronto on June 30, establishing a career high...Strung together 218 total errorless chances at shortstop June 30-August 27...Established a career high with four RBI on September 18 versus Toronto...Equaled a career best with three hits at Kansas City on September 23.
